わたしはイギリスに留学する前に母に買ってもらったものがあります。それはSEIKOの目覚まし時計です。数えてみますと、もう30年も使っています。一度日本に帰るときにスーツケースに入れて壊れてしまいましたが、日本の時計屋さんに修理してもらいまして、それからは一度も故障せずにずっと動き続けています。母から本当に良い贈り物をもらいました。後どれぐらい持つのか分かりませんが、できたらわたしよりも長生きしてほしいと思っています。 

My mother had bought me one thing before I went to England to study.  It was a SEIKO alarm clock.  I’ve been using it for about thirty years.  One time I put it in my suitcase on the way back to Japan and the clock broke, but I had a watchmaker fix it in Japan, and since that it has been working well without any trouble.  She gave me a very good gift.  I do not know how long it will work, but I wish it will last longer than I. 

神はわたしたちに多くの贈り物をくださいました。その中でも最高の贈り物は救いです。わたしたちは生まれたときから罪人です。罪の支払う報酬は死です（ローマ6:23）。しかし、神はわたしたちに永遠の命という尊い贈り物をくださいました。

God gave us many gifts.  Among the best of them is salvation.  We are born to be sinners.  “The wages of sin is death.”  But He gave us the precious gift of eternal life. 

エペソ2:5bあなたがたの救われたのは、恵みによるのである――

Ephesians 2:5 (by grace you have been saved),

わたしたちは神のお恵みによって救われています。神が御子イエスをこの世に送りになり、イエスが身代わりにわたしたちが受けなくてはならない死の刑罰を受けてくださいました。そしてわたしたちが永遠に生きるようにしてくださいました。わたしたちが誰であろうと、どんな過去をもっていようとも、そんなことは関係ありません。イエスは「すべて重荷を負うて苦労している者は、わたしのもとにきなさい。あなたがたを休ませてあげよう」（マタイ11:28）言われました。イエスは誰でも受け入れてくださるのです。誰にでも救いを与えてくださるのです。これが神からのお恵みです。

We are saved by God’s grace.  God sent His Son Jesus to the world, who took the death penalty which we deserve, upon Himself.  And He gave us the chance to live eternally.  He disregards who we are and our past.  Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew11:28).  He accepts anyone who comes to Him.  He offers salvation to everybody.  This is His grace.  

しかし、この贈り物は受け取らなくては意味がありません。わたしたちは救いを信じて、それを受け取るときにはじめて救われるのです。

But this gift is no good for anyone until it is accepted.  It is only when we accept the gift of salvation by faith that we are saved. 

エペソ2:8 あなたがたの救われたのは、実に、恵みにより、信仰によるのである。それは、あなたがた自身から出たものではなく、神の賜物である。

2:9 決して行いによるのではない。それは、だれも誇ることがないためなのである。

Eph.2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

2:9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

ここに「あなたがたの救われたのは、実に、恵みにより、信仰によるのである」と書かれています。救いはお恵みですが、わたしたちがそれを受け取らなくてはなりません。信じて受け取るのです。ちょうど親から何かをもらうときのようなものです。皆さんは親から物をもらうとき疑わないと思います。親はいつも良いものくれます。ですから安心してそれを受け取れます。何の心配もする必要はありません。天の父なる神はわたしたちに「救いの贈り物をあげる」と約束されたのですから、それを信じさえすればいいのです。パウロはキリストを信じる者について次のように言いました。「こういうわけで、今やキリスト･イエスにある者は罪に定められることがない」（ローマ8:1）。わたしたちは信仰によってキリストにつながっている限り、もはや罰せられることはないのです。

Here we read, “For by grace you have been saved through faith.”  Salvation is grace, but it must be received by us.  We must acquire it by faith.  This is like receiving something from our parents.  I doubt that any of you would question anything that you would receive from your parents.  Whatever they give you is always good.  You have peace of mind.  You have no worries.  So, because the heavenly Father promised the gift of salvation to us, all we need is to just believe in it and receive it.  Paul said to the believers in Christ; “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans8:1).  As long as we are linked to Christ by faith, we will never be punished.

新しい欽定訳聖書(NKJV)には、「救い」と言う言葉が150回出てきます。日本語の口語訳聖書でしたら、208回も出てきます。これほど何度も繰り返して、わたしたちの救いのことが聖書で語られています。感謝です。もしわたしが皆さんに「新車を差し上げます」と宣言したとしても、おそらく冗談だとお思いになるでしょう。でも150回も宣言すれば、お信じになるのではありませんか。しかも、文書でそれを宣言すれば、もっと信じていただけると思います。救いは何度も聖書に約束されているのです。

You find the word “salvation” 150 times in NKJV, and 208 times in Japanese Bible in Colloquial.  The Bible repeats the assurance of our salvation over and over again.  Thanks to the Lord.  If I said to you in public, “I will give you a brand new car,” you would think that it was a joke.  But if I said it 150 times, you might starting believing it, wouldn’t you?  And if I wrote it down, you’d probably be convinced.  Our salvation is promised to us many times in the Bible. 

では神を信じるとは救いにとって一度限りで十分なのでしょうか。いいえ、そうではありません。今日信じて、明日も信じて、来週も再来週も、キリストが来られるまでずっと信じ続けるのです。救いのお恵みを継続的なかたちで受け入れるのです。

Well, do you think that believing God once is enough for salvation?  Not at all!  You need to continually accept Him by faith, today, tomorrow, next week, the following week, until Jesus comes again.  We need to accept the grace of salvation on a continuing basis. 

信じるとは誰かを信頼するようなことです。その人を知り、その人を愛することです。それは一種のコミュニケーションです。交わりです。ですから、ずっと信じていくためには、時間の使い方に特に気をつけなくてはなりません。神と過ごす時間に特別な努力が必要です。朝の早い時間を神のために設けてはどうでしょうか。朝食と同じぐらいの時間を、神との交わりにつかってはどうでしょうか。祈りとみ言葉の学びは一日の働きの基盤です。毎日の神との交わりの時間が、安息日のこうした礼拝をもっと祝福されたものにします。しかしもしそれを怠ってしまうならば、礼拝が形式的なものになってしまいます。

Faith is trusting someone else.  It is to get to know him, and to love him.  It is like communication.  It is something like personal fellowship.  So to keep trusting God, we need to pay a careful attention on the management of our time.  We need to put our deliberate effort towards spending time with God.  Why don’t you find time for Him early in the morning?  Why don’t you sacrifice your time at least as much as the time you spend for breakfast?  Your devotional time in prayer and Bible study is the foundation of your daily work.  Your thoughtful private hour with God really makes Sabbath worship a blessing to you.  But if you fail to spend the time with Him on a daily basis, Sabbath public worship will be simply become routine. 

わたしには甘いものを食べる習慣がありません。特に嫌いではないですが、普段はあまり食べようとしません。と言うのも小さい時に食べていなかったからです。デザートというしゃれた言葉を聞いたことがありませんでした。ケーキを食べたこともありませんでした。チョコレートも食べたことがありませんでした。キャンディも食べたことがありませんでした。お腹がすけば、乾燥した小魚を食べたり、お煎餅を食べていました。本当に甘いものとは縁がありませんでした。こういう習慣ができていて良かったと思います。甘いものを食べなくてもぜんぜん苦しくありません。誘惑も感じません。

I do not have the habit of eating sweets.  I do not mean that I dislike them, but I usually don’t eat them.  That is because I did not eat them when I was small.  I never heard the word “dessert.”  I didn’t eat any cake.  I didn’t eat any chocolate.  I didn’t eat any candy.  When I got hungry, I ate small dried fish, or I ate some salty Japanese crackers.  I hardly ate any sweets.  I think I was very lucky to have this kind of habit.  I didn’t suffer from not eating any sweets.  I don’t feel any temptation.

でも世の中には、この甘いものを食べない習慣を身に着けるために戦っている人たちがたくさんいます。ある雑誌で読んだのですが、新しい習慣を作り上げるのに、だいたい6ヶ月かかると言われています。この6ヶ月間を忍耐すると、気持ちが安定してくるそうです。

But there are a lot of people who are fighting hard to have a good habit of not eating any sweets. A magazine which I read says that it takes about six months to build a new habit.  After six months of patience you, experience stability. 

もし皆さんの中で、毎朝の個人的な祈りとみ言葉の学びを習慣にしておられない方がいらっしゃるならば、6ヶ月（9月一杯まで）がんばって続けてみてください。皆さんが毎日神とお交わりをする時間を設けて、神を心に招待するならば、神は必ずわたしたちのうちに信じる心を育ててくださいます。信仰生活で分からないことが多くあっても、神を疑わなくなります。どれほど大きな試練がやってきたとしても、神に信頼してすべてをお任せすることができるのです。

If some of you do not have a habit of having devotional time for praying or studying the Bible daily, I encourage you to develop that habit for six months.  If you set up the devotional hour with God everyday, and invite Him to your heart, He will certainly nurture your faith.  Even though you may not understand many things in your spiritual life, you will not make any doubt of them.  Even though you face many temptations, you trust in God and leave everything into His hands. 

もう一度エペソ2:8-9をお読みします。

Let me read Ephesians 2:8-9.

エペソ2:8 あなたがたの救われたのは、実に、恵みにより、信仰によるのである。それは、あなたがた自身から出たものではなく、神の賜物である。

2:9 決して行いによるのではない。それは、だれも誇ることがないためなのである。

Eph.2:8 For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God,

2:9 not of works, lest anyone should boast.

ここでパウロは信じることも自分の手柄にできないと言っています。信仰も神の賜物です。救いや恵みと同じように自分から作り出すものではないのです。神のわざです。ですから、わたしたちにできることは、朝の静かな時に、個人的に神と交わりの時を持つのです。祈るのです。み言葉を学ぶのです。信じる心は神が育ててくださるのです。何も心配することはありません。

Here Paul says that we cannot take credit for believing.  Faith is a gift from God.  It is not of our own doing just like salvation and grace.  It is purely God’s action.  So what we can do is to find a quiet moment in the morning and spend a personal, thoughtful hour with God.  We pray to Him.  We study His words.  He will nurture our heart to believe.  We need not have any worries. 

神戸の病院で働いていた頃に、末期癌患者さんが入院して来られました。その方に最初にお会いした時、とても険しい表情をしていました。その患者さんは以前の病院でいろいろなトラブルに巻き込まれて、医者や看護婦が信じられなくなったのです。しかし、わたしたちのアドベンチスト病院にしばらく入院するようになって、表情が非常に穏やかになり、1ヶ月が過ぎた頃には、クリスチャンになりたいと言うようになりました。実は、看護婦たちはその患者さんのために一生懸命に看護をするだけでなく、イエスの話をたくさんしてあげたのです。

When I was working at Kobe Adventist Hospital, a terminally ill cancer patient was sent to the hospital.  As I met her for the first time, she looked at me very harshly.  I was told that she had a lot of problems with the previous hospital and could not believe any doctors and nurses.  But after a couple weeks of her staying in the hospital, she looked calm, and within a month she began to say “I want to be a Christian.”  It was because the nurses had been giving her a good care and telling her about Jesus. 

わたしはその方のために信仰告白による洗礼を考えて、その儀式の準備に取り掛かりました。しかし、その準備を始めて2,3日も経たないうちに、癌が脳に転移してしまって、普通に物事を考えることができなくなりました。残念ながら、信仰告白の儀式はできなくなりましたが、まだ脳が正常である時の信仰を神は受け入れてくださったことを信じて、神にすべてをゆだねることにいたしました。

Then I, thinking of her Profession of Faith, began to prepare for the ceremony.  But just after a few days, the cancer spread to her brain, and she was no longer able to think normally.  Unfortunately we could not conduct the service for her Profession of Faith, but we left everything into God’s hand, believing that He had accepted her faith when she was normal.   

それから数日が経ったころです。その方のところに一人の男性が面会に来られました。その人は患者さんと別れた夫でした。娘が自分の母親が死ぬ前に、何とか父親ともう一度会わせたいと思ったのです。

A few days passed.  The patient was visited by a gentleman.  He was her ex-husband.  His daughter wanted to let the father see her mother before she died. 

皆さん、妻はどんな様子で別れた夫を向かえたと思いますか。彼女の脳はもう癌におかされて、正常に考えることができないはずでした。ところが、彼女がその夫の顔を見たときに、涙を流したのです。夫のことが分かったのです。それも離婚する前の夫を思い出したのです。二人で一緒に暮らした楽しい記憶がよみがえって来ました。それから数日して、この患者さんは静かに息を引き取られました。

Brothers and sisters, how do you think the patient greeted her ex-husband?   Her brain was damaged by cancer, and she could not have thought normally.  But surprisingly as soon as she saw him, she had tears.  She recognised him.  And she recalled him before their separation.  Their happy memories came back to her.  And after several days she passed away quietly.  

神のなさることはその時にかなってとても美しいです。神は常にわたしたちの心に働いてくださっています。わたしたちが心を開いて神をお迎えすれば、神は中に入ってくださるのです。そして信じる心を育ててくださいます。

God makes everything beautiful.  He is always working on us.  The moment we open our heart to Him, He will come into us.  And He will care for us and nurture us. 

どうぞ神との交わりのために静かな時を聖別してください。祈りとみ言葉の学びの時を毎日大切に守ってください。その聖なる交わりの中で、信仰が育っていく神の奇跡を体験しようではありませんか。そしてイエスのご再臨のときまで信仰をしっかりと持ち続けてまいりましょう。

So let us set aside a quiet hour to have communion with God.  Let us cherish your daily devotional time in prayer and the Bible study.  Let us experience God’s miracle of our growing faith in His holy fellowship.  Let us firmly hold our faith till the coming of the Lord Jesus.
