If You Do Not Forgive

先日アメリカのバージニア工科大学で、1人の学生による銃乱射事件があり、32人の人たちが殺害されたことが大きなニュースとして報道されました。ご両親をはじめご家族の皆さんは本当に辛い思いでこのときを過ごしておられるでしょう。また同じ頃に、アンドリュース大学の神学部では1人の学生が教授を襲って怪我をさせたという知らせをカンファレンスから受けました。武器は使われていませんでした。最近ショッキングなニュースが流れてきます。いったいこれからこの世の中がどうなっていくのだろうかと不安な気持ちでいる人たちも多くおられると思います。もし人々の心に赦す愛が育っているならばこのようなことは起こらないでしょう。

Just a few days ago at the Virginia Tech University one gunman shot and killed 32 people, which became big news this week.  I feel very sorry for them and their families.  And also on April 16^th, approximately 9:15 am, at the Seventh-day Adventist Theological Seminary, one Andrews University student threatened and assaulted a teacher in his office, which was reported by the Ontario Conference.  No weapon was involved in this incident.  There are a lot of shocking news these days.  Many people wonder what the world is going to be in future.  But one thing is very sure that if people have warm heart of love to forgive, nothing like these things will happen.

人を赦すというのは容易いことではありません。ペトロはイエスのところへ来て、「もし兄弟がわたしに罪を犯したら、何回赦せばいいでしょうか。7回までですか」と尋ねました。パリサイ派の学者たちは「赦しは3回まで」と制限していましたので、ペトロはその3回を2倍にして、更におまけの1を足して、「7回まで赦すべきでしょうか」と言いました。ご存知の通り、数字の7は聖書のなかでは完全を表す数字ですから、ペトロは「完全に赦すべきでしょうか」と言いたかったのでしょう。すると、イエスは「7回どころか7の70倍までも赦しなさい」と言われました。赦す回数を数えないで、無制限に赦しなさいと言われたのです。それには訳があるのです。それはあらゆる人たちが想像を絶するほどの赦しを神から受けているからなのです。イエスはこのことを伝えるために次のたとえを語られました。マタイ18:23-35をお開きください。

It is not easy to forgive someone.  Peter came to Jesus and asked, “How often should I forgive someone, when he sins against me?  Up to seven times?”  The Pharisees limited the number of forgiveness to three times, so Peter doubled their number and added one to make seven, and said, “Should I forgive seven times?”  As you know, the number seven is commonly used in the Bible to communicate completeness, so Peter wanted to ask if he should forgive completely.  Jesus replied, “You should not forgive seven times but seventy times seven.”  He was recommending unlimited forgiveness without counting how many times.  There is a reason for this.  That is, everyone has already been forgiven far beyond their comprehension.  To illustrate this truth Jesus told the following parable.  Please open Matthew18:23-35.

マタイ18:23 それだから、天国は王が僕たちと決算をするようなものだ。

18:24 決算が始まると、一万タラントの負債のある者が、王のところに連れられてきた。

18:25 しかし、返せなかったので、主人は、その人自身とその妻子と持ち物全部とを売って返すように命じた。

18:26 そこで、この僕はひれ伏して哀願した、『どうぞお待ちください。全部お返しいたしますから』。

18:27 僕の主人はあわれに思って、彼をゆるし、その負債を免じてやった。

Matthew18:23 "Therefore the kingdom of heaven is like a certain king who wanted to settle accounts with his servants.

18:24 "And when he had begun to settle accounts, one was brought to him who owed him ten thousand talents.

18:25 "But as he was not able to pay, his master commanded that he be sold, with his wife and children and all that he had, and that payment be made.

18:26 "The servant therefore fell down before him, saying, 'Master, have patience with me, and I will pay you all.'

18:27 "Then the master of that servant was moved with compassion, released him, and forgave him the debt.

ここに登場する僕は主人に対して1万タラントの借金をしていました。1万タラントは6千万日分の労働賃金になります。仮に1日の労賃を50ドルにすると30億ドルです。30億ドルで100万ドルの家が3000件買えます。教会員の皆さんに一人ずつお家を買ってあげても、わずか50分の1の6000万ドルぐらいです。これはものすごい額の借金です。一生かけても絶対に返せません。頭では理解できないぐらいの多額の借金です。ところが、この僕は主人に見つかると、「きっとお返ししますから、どうか待ってください」と軽々しく返金の約束をするのです。

The servant in the story borrowed 10,000 talents from his lord.  The 10,000 talents was 60 million days of labour.  Supposed that the daily wage were $50, the 10,000 talents would be 3 billions dollars.  That is the equivalent of 3,000 houses which are worth one million dollars.  If I were to buy you each the million dollars house, that would be 60 millions dollars, only 1/50 of the 3 billions dollars.  It is an extremely large debt.  It is impossible for anybody to pay this debt in a lifetime.  This amount is beyond the scope of our imagination.  But the servant promised the lord by saying thoughtlessly, “Please be patient with me, and I will pay it all.” 

皆さんには借金はありますか。家やコンドをお持ちの方はモーゲジがあるでしょう。或いは新車を買った人や大学に子供をやっている人のなかには、ローンをくんでいる人もいらっしゃるでしょう。

Are you in debt?  Those who have houses or condos may have a mortgage.  Or those who have bought new cars or have kids in college or university may have taken out a loan. 

しかし皆さんにはイエスに対してもっと大きな借金があります。それは罪です。イエスのいのちと引き換えられた罪です。どんなにお金を積んでも決して払いきれないぐらいに大きな借金です。自分の力ではどんなにがんばっても解決できない問題です。たくさん献金しても、立派な奉仕活動をしても、自分のちからでは罪を消すことはできません。神でなければ解決できない大きな問題です。それなのに人は自分で罪の問題を解決しようと努力します。それは本当に愚かなことです。ちょうど30億ドルの借金を返そうと軽々しく約束する僕のようです。わたしたちの罪の問題は自分で解決するものではなくて、神に解決してもらうようにお願いしなくてはならないのです。

But you have a bigger debt that you owe to Jesus.  That is sin.  It is the equivalent to the life of Jesus.  It is so big that you can never repay it in full.  It is out of your human control.  Even if you pay a lot of offerings to the church or do good voluntary services for the church, you cannot erase the record of your sins by yourselves.  The problem of sin is so big that it can be resolved only by God.  But for some reasons people try to solve the problem of sin.  That is a foolish thing to do.  It is just like the servant who carelessly kept his word to repay the 3 billion dollars to his lord.  The problem of sin should be solved not by man but by God. 

話をたとえに戻しましょう。27節をご覧ください。主人はしきりにお願いする僕の姿を見て憐れに思い、彼を赦してあげます。彼の借金をみんな帳消しにして解放してあげます。ところが彼は主人の恩赦を受け入れませんでした。感謝の気持ちを表しませんでした。どうしてそれが分かるのでしょうか。この僕の感謝の言葉が見つからないからです。彼は主人から借金を赦してもらうと、「ありがとう」の一言も言わずにその場を去りました（28節前半）。

Let’s go back to the parable.  Look at verse 27.  The master was filled with pity for the pleading servant and forgave the debt.  He erased all the debt of the servant and released him.  But the servant did not accept the master’s pardon.  He did not show any appreciation to him.  How do we know about it?  Because we cannot find any words of gratitude from his response!  As he was offered the pardon by the master, he walked away without even saying “thank you.” 

罪の赦しは与えられるだけでは十分ではありません。それを受けなくてはなりません。「ありがとうございます」と感謝の気持ちを言葉で表して受けるのです。そうして初めてわたしたちは赦されるのです。ではそれについて話の続きから学んでみましょう。

The offer of forgiveness is not enough.  We have to accept the forgiveness that has been offered.  We have to accept it by saying “thank you.”  By doing so, we receive the forgiveness.  Now let’s continue to learn the rest of the story. 

マタイ18:28 その僕が出て行くと、百デナリを貸しているひとりの仲間に出会い、彼をつかまえ、首をしめて『借金を返せ』と言った。

18:29 そこでこの仲間はひれ伏し、『どうか待ってくれ。返すから』と言って頼んだ。

18:30 しかし承知せずに、その人をひっぱって行って、借金を返すまで獄に入れた。

Matthew18:28 "But that servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii; and he laid hands on him and took him by the throat, saying, 'Pay me what you owe!'

18:29 "So his fellow servant fell down at his feet and begged him, saying, 'Have patience with me, and I will pay you all.'

18:30 "And he would not, but went and threw him into prison till he should pay the debt.

この僕は自分にお金を貸していた仲間の一人を赦そうとしませんでした。いくらの借金が仲間にあったのでしょうか。100デナリです。100デナリとは100日分の労賃です。1日の労賃を50ドルとすれば、5,000ドルになります。100万ドルの家を3,000件買える30億ドルの借金に比べるならば微々たるものです。5,000ドルでは100万ドルの家を買うダウンペイメントにもなりません。しかし僕はそのお金を貸した仲間をどうしても赦そうとしませんでした。彼の首を絞めて、すぐに借金を返すように脅かしました。仲間は「しばらく待ってくれたら、必ず返します」と言いますが、赦しません。彼を捕まえて、借金を返すまで牢屋に入れました。

This servant did not forgive one of his fellow servants.  How much did that fellowman owe him?  It was 100 denarii.  It was the equivalent of 100 days labour wages.  If the daily wage were $50, the 100 days wages would be $5,000.  It is much less than 3 billions dollars by which you can buy 1,000 one million dollar houses.  You cannot make the 5,000 dollars as down payment to buy the one million dollars house.  But the servant would not forgive his fellow who owned the money to him.  He grabbed him by the throat, threatened him, and demanded instant payment.  The fellow man said, “Be patient with me, and I will pay it,” but the servant did not forgive his fellow.  He arrested him, and put him in prison until the debt could be paid in full. 

皆さんがこの僕の立場であればどうですか。赦しますか。それとも赦しませんか。自分は誰からも赦してもらったことがないと思う人は、おそらく赦さないでしょう。でも自分の失敗を赦してもらったことを覚えているならば、おそらく赦してあげようかと思うでしょう。或いは、自分が本当に大きな失敗をしてしまって、それを赦してもらったことをしっかりと覚えている人ならば、あの僕の立場に立たされたときに、きっと赦すでしょう。たくさん赦してもらった経験のある人は、たくさん赦すようになります。それが赦しの法則です。皆さんは自分に罪をおかす者を赦しますか。それとも戦いますか。

What would you do if you were the servant?  Would you forgive that fellow man?  Or would you not?  Those who think that they have not been forgiven by anybody would not forgive him.  But those who remember of having been forgiven would think of forgiving him.  Or those who remember of having had their big sins forgiven would certainly forgive him.  The more you are forgiven, the more you forgive.  This is the rule of forgiveness.  Will you forgive those who sin against you?  Or will you fight them? 

18:31 その人の仲間たちは、この様子を見て、非常に心をいため、行ってそのことをのこらず主人に話した。

18:32 そこでこの主人は彼を呼びつけて言った、『悪い僕、わたしに願ったからこそ、あの負債を全部ゆるしてやったのだ。

18:33 わたしがあわれんでやったように、あの仲間をあわれんでやるべきではなかったか』。

18:34 そして主人は立腹して、負債全部を返してしまうまで、彼を獄吏に引きわたした。

18:35 あなたがためいめいも、もし心から兄弟をゆるさないならば、わたしの天の父もまたあなたがたに対して、そのようになさるであろう」。

18:31 "So when his fellow servants saw what had been done, they were very grieved, and came and told their master all that had been done.

18:32 "Then his master, after he had called him, said to him, 'You wicked servant! I forgave you all that debt because you begged me.

18:33 'Should you not also have had compassion on your fellow servant, just as I had pity on you?'

18:34 "And his master was angry, and delivered him to the torturers until he should pay all that was due to him.

18:35 "So My heavenly Father also will do to you if each of you, from his heart, does not forgive his brother his trespasses."

この僕は主人から無条件に借金を赦してもらいました。釈放されました。しかしその赦しを感謝しませんでした。それだけでなく自分に借金をしている仲間を脅かしました。彼を赦そうとしませんでした。そのために主人から与えられた恩赦を失ってしまいました。彼は負債を全部返すまで牢屋に入れられてしまいました。でも負債は絶対に返すことができないほどの大金ですから、結局のところ、彼は終身刑を受けてしまったのです。

This servant had his master forgive his debt without any condition.  He was released.  But he did not give thanks to the master.  Furthermore he threatened his fellow man who owned him.  He did not forgive the man.  Then he lost the forgiveness which had been offered by the master.  He was put in prison until he paid every penny.  But because the debt was too big to be paid off, he effectively received a life sentence. 

赦しはキリストにあって無条件に与えられたものですが、わたしたちはその代わりに隣人を赦さなくてはなりません。もし隣人を赦そうとしないならば、与えられた赦しは必ずキャンセルされてしまうのです（35節）。

We are freely forgiven in Christ, and in turn we are to forgive our neighbours.  If we do not forgive the neighbours, the offer of forgiveness is always cancelled. 

エペソ4:30 神の聖霊を悲しませてはいけない。あなたがたは、あがないの日のために、聖霊の証印を受けたのである。

4:31 すべての無慈悲、憤り、怒り、騒ぎ、そしり、また、いっさいの悪意を捨て去りなさい。

4:32 互に情深く、あわれみ深い者となり、神がキリストにあってあなたがたをゆるして下さったように、あなたがたも互にゆるし合いなさい。

Ephesians4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

4:31 Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.

4:32 And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.

赦さない心は聖霊の神を悲しませてしまいます。神の御心に反することです。わたしたちは聖霊の神に心を砕いていただいて、人を赦す豊かな心を新たに造っていただかなくてはなりません。

The unforgiving spirit will grieve the Holy Spirit of God.  It is against His will.  We should have our heart broken by the Spirit of God, and let Him recreate it to love and forgive people. 

サウジアラビアの首都リヤドでJahwiという20歳の青年が殺人の有罪と宣告され、打ち首の刑を受けました。彼は処刑台に立ち、目隠しをされ、執行人が刀を振り上げました。そのときその処刑を見ていた犠牲者の父親が急に立ち上がって、犯罪人のJahwiを赦すと宣言しました。それで彼の命は助かりました。このようなことは今でもサウジアラビアでは合法的に認められています。犠牲者の家族の側に赦す心さえあれば、殺人者の命を助けることができるのです。

In the Saudi capital of Riyadh, 20 year old Jahwi was convicted of murdering another man, and received the death penalty by beheading.  He stood on the execution platform and was blindfolded, and the executioner raised his sword.  Then suddenly the murder victim’s father stood and publicly forgave Jahwi.  His life was spared.  This is still legally accepted in the Saudi.  If the victim’s family has willingness to forgive, they can spare the life of the murder. 

赦す心は大切です。お互いに赦し合う心を持ってこそ、良い家庭を作り、良い教会を作り、良い社会を作り上げていくのです。このような心の輪は誰かが進んで広げていかなくてはならないものです。黙って何もしなければ、何の変化もないでしょう。皆さん1人ひとりが神と向き合って、「赦す心を与えてください」とお願いするならば、神は必ず与えてくださいます。

The forgiving spirit is important.  When you forgive each other, you create a good family, a good church, and a good society.  Someone has to take the initiative to spread this love around us.  If you don’t do anything, nothing may happen.  But if each of you face God and ask Him, “Please give me your heart to forgive,” He will surely give it to us. 

ところで、このたとえに登場する主人は「立腹した」と書かれています。いったい何に立腹したのでしょうか。はっきりと書かれていません。あの赦そうとしなかった僕に立腹したのでしょうか。確かにそのように理解できます。しかしもう一つの解釈もあるように思います。それは主人が僕の罪に立腹したという解釈です。僕には憐れみを目で見て、彼の愚かな考えと行いに立腹したのです。このほうが聖書的でしょう。

By the way, as you have noticed, the parable said that the “master was angry.”  What or whom was he angry at?  That is not clearly said.  Was he angry about that unforgiving servant?  Possibly yes.  But there is another way to interpret the anger.  The master might be angry at the servant’s sin.  He looked at the servant with mercy, but was angry at his foolish thought and act. 

神は罪に対していつもお怒りになっていますが、罪の奴隷になったわたしたちを心から愛してくださっています。わたしたちを憐れみの目でご覧になってくださり、赦す心を与えようとされるのです。

God is always angry at sin, but loves us who are slaves to sin.  He mercifully looks at us, trying hard to give us heart of forgiveness.

どうぞ皆さん、人の過ちを赦す豊かな心が与えられるように主に祈ってください。主は必ず与えてくださいます。何故なら、主はエペソ書4:32で次のように命じられたからです。

So now brothers and sisters, let us pray that the Lord may richly grant us the forgiving spirit. He is faithful and surely gives it to us, because He gave us the following command in Eph.4: 32.  

エペソ4:32 互に情深く、あわれみ深い者となり、神がキリストにあってあなたがたをゆるして下さったように、あなたがたも互にゆるし合いなさい。

Ephesians4:32.  And be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you.
